Garden for Life Farm is an educational urban farm located in Jacksonville, Florida, dedicated to improving local access to fresh produce, building a healthy community and environment, and promoting a just and sustainable food system.
Our vision is a world in which everyone has access to affordable, healthy, and culturally appropriate food. We strive to empower communities to work collaboratively to build a food system that is socially just and environmentally and economically sustainable. Our goal is to educate the community to become more conscious of their food while reaping the rewards of local, sustainable, and conscientious farming. We believe food should have a short pathway from the yard
to the table.
Jacksonville has an abundance of food deserts and dismal health statistics. A disproportionately high number of infants don’t make it to their first birthday and obesity-related maladies are high. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that in nearly two dozen neighborhoods in Jacksonville, it’s easier to get a beer than to get a banana.
Garden for Life Farm brings something new to Jacksonville by making gardening/farming techniques and education easily accessible to all. The Garden for Life Farm includes courses on the following:
- Permaculture Hydroponics
- Herbal Nutrition
- Traditional Gardening/Farming Techniques
- Hands-on and Classroom-style Farming
- Food Preservation and Nutrition
We are expanding our project to help train and feed needy families in Jacksonville. Our four-year plan includes a three-acre “Food Park” with over 180 edible plants, nuts, fruit, herbs, vegetables, and fish. We will initiate a volunteer work-for-food program where people who lack the resources to eat nutritious food can come out and volunteer to receive a box of food based on time served. This is an educational model that provides organic food through sustainability while garnering community support.
